Our Best Hazardous Waste Day Ever!
York’s Department of Public Works held its annual Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, October 22 at the Recycling Facility on Witchtrot Road and the results were nothing short of impressive.
Vehicles began to line up outside the facility before it opened with residents eager to dispose of unwanted pesticides, varnish, lacquer thinner, used motor oil, old gasoline, antifreeze, adhesives and more.
Awaiting residents at a designated disposal area was a highly organized team of DPW crew members, volunteers and personnel from Tradebe Environmental Services who were ready, willing and able to help safely dispose of any amount of hazardous waste.
From old, dented gas cans filled with mixed fuel to greasy containers of harsh solvents, each item was carefully handled and disposed of into several specially-lined bins or industrial 55-gallon drums. Protective gear was definitely the order of the day and no spills, injuries or accidents occurred.
The resulting day’s tally included over 160 residents taking part in the event, over ten drums filled with hazardous waste and thousands of pounds of potentially toxic materials hauled away.
“It was a great turnout this year as people were still trying to register for the event right up to Saturday. There was never a lull in the line of cars dropping off items and the day just flew by!” said Dean Lessard, Director of York Public Works.
DPW wishes to thank everyone who helped make this year’s event such a success and welcome feedback from residents who took part in the event.
