A Cooperative Project with York’s Water and Sewer Districts

This multi-phased project includes water main and sewer main replacement, road, drainage, and sidewalk improvements. DPW is also adding a paved shoulder and sidewalk to improve the bicycle and pedestrian experience.

Nubble Road Capital Improvement Project – Phase 6 Update

Now that the bulk of the summer tourist season is behind us, Phase 6 of the Nubble Road Capital Improvement Project is resuming the week of September 6, 2026.

This phase covers approximately 976 feet of Nubble Road and is expected to continue from now through the end of October or early November, with all work and scheduling weather dependent.

What’s Happening?

The roadway will be widened from approximately 22 feet to 26 feet, with a new 5-foot sidewalk on the land side of Nubble Road. To accomplish this, crews will be working along both sides of the roadway to excavate and prepare the area.

On September 9, work began with a Wirtgen Pavement Reclaimer grinding up the existing road surface — literally driving down the street while grinding up the old asphalt as it moves. The recycled, gravel-like material, known as “reclaim,” exits from the back of the machine, where a grader spreads and levels it across the roadway.

Next, heavy-duty rollers will compact and smooth the reclaim, creating a strong, stable road base in preparation for paving.

Drainage & Road Improvements

As with previous phases of this Capital Improvement Project, DPW will be installing the new drainage plan, including removing and replacing undersized or failing culverts to improve drainage.

The project will also include:

  • New slip-form concrete curbing
  • A new 5-foot sidewalk
  • Paved shoulders
  • Landscaping improvements
  • Complete resurfacing of the roadway

Upcoming Project Milestones

October 23: Base pavement is currently scheduled to begin.

Once the base pavement is completed, Dirigo Slipform will be brought in to install the concrete curbing that will define the new sidewalk.

After the curbing is installed, crews can begin constructing the new sidewalk, with sidewalk paving anticipated during the first week of November.

All dates are weather dependent and subject to change.

A Challenging Phase

This is expected to be one of the more challenging phases of the Nubble Road project due to the significant amount of hard ledge that crews will encounter during construction.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews and contractors work through these challenges and continue making important improvements to Nubble Road.

 

Construction Area

Nubble Road between Sohier Park and the View Point Hotel During construction, residents in the area will continue to have access to their homes. Curbside trash collection and emergency vehicle access will also be maintained. Businesses will remain open throughout construction.

 

Motorist Alert

Please use extra caution when traveling through the construction area. Be aware of work crews and heavy machinery, expect delays, and, when possible, please consider using an alternate route during the day.
